  • When Kapil Sibal Asked Justice Bela Trivedi If She Had “Some Empathy”

Kapil Sibal recounted a courtroom moment involving Justice Bela Trivedi that had stayed with him

Justice Bela M Trivedi demitted office on Friday after serving over three and a half years on the Supreme Court of India. Tributes poured in on her last day in court, including a recount of an older case from senior lawyer and Supreme Court Bar Association head, Kapil Sibal.

“This court is a constellation of stars, and you are one of them,” Mr Sibal said. “Just think about it, you are the 11th woman judge in this court. In the 75 years of this country, one lady judge was appointed every seven odd years. That itself is a great milestone.”

Mr Sibal recounted a courtroom moment that had stayed with him. In a matter involving a person prosecuted under the stringent anti-terror Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Mr Sibal had pleaded for the individual’s transfer from Karnataka to Kerala. Justice Trivedi ruled against the request.

“Out of a hunch, I said, ‘I expect your ladyship to have some empathy.’ Your ladyship then said, ‘You don’t know me then,’” Mr Sibal recalled. “Well, we knew you before you came here. And we will know you after you leave here. Thank you very much for what you have done. I don’t think any judge in this court bows down to popular sentiment.”

Justice Trivedi’s departure was not without controversy. The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), in a departure from tradition, chose not to organise a farewell function for Justice Trivedi. The Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai, presiding over the ceremonial bench, did not conceal his disappointment.

“I must deprecate openly, because I believe in speaking plainly… The association (SCBA) ought not to have been such a stand,” Chief Justice Gavai said.

The CJI specifically thanked Kapil Sibal and SCBA vice-president Rachna Srivastava for attending the ceremonial bench despite the association’s resolution.

“I am grateful to Kapil Sibal and Rachna Srivastava, both of them are here. But the stand taken by the Association, I must deprecate openly… On such an occasion, such a stand ought not to have been taken by the Association,” he said. “So therefore, I am openly appreciating Sibal and Srivastava for their presence. Despite the resolution of their bodies, they are here. But what has been lost by the association, the presence of the Full House here, vindicates that she is a very very good judge. There are different types of judges, but that should not be a factor to deny what ought to have been granted.”

Justice Trivedi began as a trial court judge in Ahmedabad in July 1995 and rose through the ranks of the judiciary to reach the highest court of the country. She was elevated to the Supreme Court on August 31, 2021, as part of a historic move that saw nine judges, including three women, sworn in on the same day.

Born on June 10, 1960, in Gujarat’s Patan, Justice Trivedi practised law for a decade in the Gujarat High Court before entering the judicial service. In 1995, she was appointed as a judge of the city civil and sessions court in Ahmedabad. A notable footnote in her early judicial career was that her father was a judge in the same court, which led to an entry in the Limca Book of Indian Records under the category of “Father-daughter judges in the same court.”

  • YouTube Announces Gemini-Powered ‘Peak Points’ to Pinpoint Optimal Ad Moments in a Video

YouTube unveiled a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature for its advertisers on Wednesday. The new feature, dubbed Peak Points, was showcased at the company’s Brandcast event held in New York. The Google-owned video streaming giant said that the feature will use Gemini to determine the moment in a video where viewers are most engaged. This moment will then be picked as an ad slot to maximise the reach of the advertisement. Notably, the feature is currently said to be available as a pilot programme.

YouTube Unveils Peak Points to Find the Best Ad Slot in a Video

In a blog post, YouTube detailed the new advertiser-focused feature. Ads are one of the most important revenue streams for the video streaming company. Not only does it bring revenue to the company, but it also helps monetise videos, and a percentage of total ad revenue from the video is shared with the creators.

In the past, the company has placed ads at the beginning of the videos, added unskippable ads, and even gone after those who use ad-blockers to avoid seeing ads. According to a report, YouTube is also working on showing ads that appear when a video is paused. All of these measures are likely to ensure that more people watch ads.

The fundamentals behind the newly unveiled Peak Points feature are also along the same vein. YouTube said that it will leverage Gemini to analyse videos and find out the moments when viewers are most engaged. These could be a climactic moment in the video, or a moment right before something special occurs.

In a demo video showcasing the feature, Gemini was able to pinpoint an ad window right before a person proposes to his girlfriend. According to a CNBC report, Gemini finds out these moments by analysing the video frame-by-frame and going through the transcript of the video. The company did not specify if user behaviour (pausing a video at a specific spot, or rewinding the video multiple times) was also collected and analysed for this feature.

    • Travel YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra Arrested For Spying For Pakistan

Jyoti Malhotra, 33, ran a travel account on YouTube called ‘Travel With Jo’.

Jyoti Malhotra, a YouTuber, was arrested for sharing military information.

She traveled to Pakistan at least twice and met intelligence officials there.

Malhotra kept in touch with them after her visit.

She was a YouTuber by day and a spy, well, also by day, presumably.

Jyoti Malhotra aka Jyoti Rani, who ran a travel account on YouTube called ‘Travel With Jo’, has been arrested from Hisar in Haryana for sharing Indian military information with Pakistan, police said on Saturday.  She is among six people, including a 25-year-old student and 24-year-old security guard, from Punjab and Haryana who have been arrested on these charges.

Officials said the 33-year-old, who describes herself in her YouTube as a ‘nomadic Leo girl wanderer’, ‘Haryanvi+Punjabi’ and ‘purane khyalo ki modern ladki’ (a modern girl with a traditional outlook),  had come in contact with an official, Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, in the Pakistan High Commission and had gone to the neighbouring country at least twice.

After last week’s hostilities following the Pahalgam terror attack and India’s response, dubbed ‘Operation Sindoor’, Rahim had reportedly been declared persona non grata and asked to leave India within 24 hours for committing espionage and leaking sensitive information regarding the movements of the Indian Army.

During her interrogation, Malhotra told the police that she had gone to the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi in 2023 to get a visa to visit the country when she met Rahim and began talking to him. She said she travelled to Pakistan twice after that and met Rahim’s acquaintance Ali Ahwan, who arranged for her stay and travel in the country.

      Confession

“In Pakistan, Ali Ahwan arranged a meeting with Pakistani security and intelligence officials and I met Shakir and Rana Shahbaz. I took Shakir’s mobile number and saved it in my phone under the name of ‘Jat Randhawa’ to avoid suspicion. Then I came back to India and remained in constant touch with all the above people through platforms like WhatsApp, Snapchat and Telegram and started sharing anti-national information. I also met Rahim several times,” Officials quoted Malhotra as having told the police.

They said Malhotra, who is a resident of Hisar, has been charged for endangering the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India by carrying out suspicious activities and sharing Indian intelligence information with a citizen of Pakistan who has been declared persona non grata by the Government of India on charges of espionage.

Malhotra has been sent to police custody for five days.
